Jotura

Every feature, none of the bloat.

What's actually in Jotura today, why we built it that way, and how it stays out of your way.

01

Write without thinking about markdown.

Type the way you do in any modern editor — headings, bold, lists, quotes, checklists, real tables. The formatting just appears as you go; there's nothing to memorize. Want to see the raw markdown? Flip to source mode any time. Underneath, every note is a plain markdown file, so your writing stays readable and portable forever.

02

Find any note in a second.

Start typing and Jotura jumps to the note you mean — by its title if you remember the name, or by a phrase buried somewhere in the body if you don't. It stays instant whether you have a hundred notes or ten thousand, because the searching happens on your machine, not over the network.

03

Plain files on your disk, encrypted in the cloud.

Your notes are ordinary markdown files in an ordinary folder — open them with any app, back them up however you like, keep them forever. When you turn on sync, everything is encrypted on your device before it leaves, with a key made from a password that never leaves your machine. We can't read your notes on our servers, and neither can anyone who breaks into them. For the files on your own disk, use FileVault or BitLocker — the protection your whole computer deserves, not just your notes.

04

Your notes on every device.

Turn on sync for a vault and your notes follow you — jot something on your laptop at lunch, pick up where you left off on your desktop at home. If the same note changes in two places, Jotura keeps both versions side by side instead of quietly overwriting one. Sync is optional and per-vault: a vault you never sync never leaves your computer.

05

Fast because it's yours.

Notes open the instant you click them and searches return as fast as you can type — there's no spinner waiting on someone else's server, because everything you do happens right on your machine. It feels immediate at ten notes and still feels immediate at ten thousand.

06

Documents, not just notes.

Drop a PDF, Word doc, or spreadsheet into your vault and it lives right alongside your notes. Jotura quietly reads what's inside each one, so you can find a document by its contents — not just its filename. Because it's a real file in a real folder, you can open it in the app you'd normally reach for, like Word or Preview, and your edits are saved in place. Nothing extra to install, and it all works offline.

07

Organize it your way.

A vault is just a folder of folders — arrange it however makes sense to you, drag notes between folders, and keep several open in tabs at once. There's no rigid structure to fit into and no database to learn; it works the way you already think about files.

08

Works the same everywhere.

macOS, Windows, and Linux, with the same vault and the same notes on each. Move between computers as often as you like — there's nothing to convert and nothing to re-import; you just open the vault and keep going.

09

Genuinely private.

No analytics, no tracking, no "anonymous usage data", no ads, nothing quietly phoning home. The only time Jotura touches the internet is to sync your encrypted notes between your devices — and only after you ask it to.
